What to Expect with Your New Concrete Sink

Understanding Your New Concrete Purchase

Concrete is a natural material that provides a durable and beautiful surface. Concrete will have “imperfections” or variations in the surface, such as color variations or texture variations. Some areas may have darker or lighter colorations than the rest of the surface. Some areas may show a little more of the fine aggregates and sand in the mix, which can appear to alter the color or texture. Some areas may have small pinholes or air bubbles that had to be filled or grouted in, which will still be visible and may have a variation in color. This is all absolutely normal and is not in any way a flaw in the material.

We seal our concrete with a reactive sealer. This sealer is designed to react with the concrete to make the concrete itself stain resistant, while maintaining its natural breathability. As the concrete ages it continues to strengthen its stain repellency. This occurs most drastically over the first few months to a year, but continues over time.

Please Note

  • For several weeks after applying the sealer you may notice the concrete darken in the areas where water and things are left on the surface. This is normal as the cross linking if the sealer continues. Darkening of the surface is not an indication that the sealer is not working, in fact it is a normal reaction as the sealer continues to cure. ICT Reactive Sealers are breathable sealers which allow water vapor to move through the sealer, but should not easily let tannins from staining agents through. Avoid allowing water to be trapped on the surface by using coasters or wiping up spills in a reasonable amount of time.
  • If these spots do occur, they will dissipate over time, usually a few weeks or more. If you prefer to help them dissipate faster, we can provide do-it-yourself methods at your request.
  • To clean your surfaces we recommend using Vinegar and water, or Clorox cleaning products. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Do not cut on the finished surface or drag objects with sharp or rough edges across the surface.
  • Protect the surface from contaminants during construction. Do not leave tape adhered to the surface or cover with plastic.
